MAKING-CITY is an European Horizon 2020 project focused on demonstrating the potential of the PED approach as the basis for efficient and sustainable planning and development of cities. Deploying solutions to help cities implement the PED concept, MAKING-CITY aims to address and demonstrate the urban energy system transformation towards smart and low-carbon cities to adopt a long-term City Vision 2050 for energy transition and sustainable urbanisation whilst turning citizens into actors of this transformation.  The PED concept will be tested and validated in two Lighthouse cities: Groningen (Netherlands) and Oulu (Finland). It will be then replicated in 6 Follower cities: Bassano del Grappa (Italy), Kadiköy (Turkey), León (Spain), Lublin (Poland), Trenčín (Slovakia), and Vidin (Bulgaria). The technologies selected to be implemented in the project are mature or already on the market. The PED concept appears as a step beyond the current European building regulations by bringing major structural, societal, economical and technological changes in the cities.

The Smart Cities Marketplace helps towns and cities of all sizes to create more sustainable urban environments and offers all the information needed to explore, shape and set up successful smart city projects. This includes a repository of EU climate-neutral and smart city projects, a hub for those looking to bring climate-neutral and smart city projects to the market, a matchmaking process to create financing opportunities, and a forum for knowledge exchange in dedicated focus groups.
